Joe Pereira

Joe Pereira works for the 5 time California award winning wastewater treatment facility, The Union Sanitary District in Union City, Ca.. USD serves the sanitary needs for the citizens of Fremont, Newark, and Union City, CA. They operate and maintain over 800 miles of underground gravity sewers, force mains, lift and pump stations. Presently USD is able to treat over 30+ million gallons of wastewater per day(MGD). Joe presently work as a Collection System Technologist. He has extensive knowledge in CCTV, cleaning, rodding, sewer root and grease removal. Joe is a certified HDPE pipe fuser and also a certified forklift instructor. USD encourages employees to be cross trained. Some of his responsibilities are cleaning and televising sewer lines, making necessary repairs, and responding to underground locating calls. Amongst other duties, root control is the one Joe enjoys the most.

Early on in 1993, Joe started his career at USD as a Building & Grounds Maintenance Worker. He was responsible for the custodial and all the landscaping at various locations. Joe thought about it and concluded that he needed his QAC. Joe did some research and found PAPA was the best way to go about it. Using PAPA as a resource he took his tests and passed and got his certificate in sewer root control in 2003. Presently, Joe is an active 10 year member of the CWEA (California Water Environment Association). Joe is still an active committee member for PAPA’s San Francisco Bay Area Section. Joe states, "It is a privilege to serve the membership of my region and the people of the State of California."

Joe lives in Newark, CA, where he has been a resident for 45 years. He is a single father with 2 boys, 12 and 14 years old. Joe is very active in many organizations in his area, such as, he plays saxophone and has been a musician for 38 years. In 2004-2005 Joe was the President of the Portuguese Band in Newark. He's also a very active part of his local little league as a board member for the last 2 years and running.
